Black Lake is one of the Indian River Lakes that run between
the “Thousand Islands” and the Adirondacks. Of these 15 bodies
of water that run between the St. Lawrence-Jefferson County Line,
Black Lake is the most popular. Black Lake has more than 60 miles
of shoreline, water depth ranging fro 10 to 40 feet.
Black Lake is the largest and most diverse of the many Indian River lakes. Black Lake is truly a Freshwater Fisherman’s Utopia; With it’s unpolluted waters Black Lake has NO fish consumption advisories. Black Lake is of glacial origin, having been formed by the melting of continental glaciation in the state around 12,000 years ago. Water flows into the lake from several sources, the largest being the Indian River. The lake drains into the Oswegatchie River and then into the Saint Lawrence River.
The lake covers an area of nearly 11,000 acres, stretching just over 20 miles and 3 1/2 miles at its widest point. There are so many small islands that offer any fisherman all kinds of idyllic fishing environments including numerious rocky shoals, sandbars, weed beds, and shallows.
While fishing at Riccis' Reel it Inn is limited to Spring, Summer and Fall. Black Lake fishing is year round. Ice fishing generally begins late December and runs through the middle of March. In the spring, after the Ice goes out, the shoreline lanterns and campfires of the bullhead fishermen light up the evening sky.
In July 2003, Fish & Game Finder Magazine said: "Black Lake has been famed in past years to be ranked in the top ten bass fisheries in the nation. I’d be willing to bet that is still the case. Five and six pound bass are commonplace. There are plenty of places on this largest of the Indian River lakes where plenty of depth change and cover provide opportunity for ‘thee’ lunker to thrive. Many of these lunkers in the past have found their way onto many anglers’ walls." Thank you Fish & Game Finder Magazine. http://fishandgame.com/ny/blacklake.htm
